Sealing countertops is essential for protecting them from stains, moisture, and wear. Here’s a quick guide based on the material.

Sealing does not make the stone stain proof, rather it makes the stone more stain resistant. Before sealing consult with DesignCo, many stones and quartz do not require sealing. If a sealer is applied in a food preparation area, be sure that it is non-toxic and safe for use. Consult with your sealing manufacturer specific to the type of sealer and frequency of use recommended.

Granite & Marble

  1. Test if sealing is needed: Place a few drops of water on the surface—if it darkens within 15 minutes, it needs sealing.

  2. Choose the right sealer: A penetrating or impregnating sealer with fluorocarbon aliphatic resin offers long-lasting protection.

  3. Apply the sealer: Spray or wipe it on, let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then wipe off excess.

  4. Repeat if necessary: Some porous stones may need multiple coats.

  5. Reseal annually: High-use areas may need resealing every 1–3 years

Quartz

  • No sealing required: Quartz and other engineered stones are non-porous and don’t need sealing
